James is a molecular plant pathologist and nematologist at The James Hutton Institute with a PhD in and 10 years of experience working with plant-parasitic nematodes. With a specific focus on PCN, he has investigated parasite-host interactions, specifically; hatching, nematode surface-coats, screening for host PCN resistance and investigating host tolerance to PCN. 

James holds an honorary lectureship appointment at the University of St. Andrews and also provides lectures on nematode life cycle biology for the University of Ghent International Master of Science in Agro- and Environmental Nematology (IMaNema) course. 

James is currently the project lead of the PCN Action Scotland Group.
